zombiku 20: the ones that got away

becoming dead

mouth
and
eyes sewn
awaken
skin a tight fit brain
turns like gears sinking in tar still
struggling to turn thoughts scatter into infinite sea

As Walt Kelly said, usually we laugh at what don't scare us none. Maybe it works both ways, which I think is what he meant.

Zombiku 18: can't leave 'em alone

In a warm climate they need protection

once a month we
soak 'em in bug-killer
carpenter bees
wood beetles termites etc.
they'll eat anything dead

mercy killing

Twitching against pre-dawn ropes

prions ravage
vulnerable vampire brains
stolen blood
creutzfeldt-jakob plaques

zombiku 13: there is more left to lose

reunions

she unthreads her lips
cries to the distant stars her name
another awkwardly pats her shoulder turns away

zombiku 7: last meal

amazonfail

Amazon attacks marginalized people: google amazonfail. Then shop here for books instead http://www.addall.com/ It's egalitarian, cheaper, & supports small business.

Edit: Well, seems possible amazon was only guilty of arrogance & incompetence.

Update on future issues

the next issue is number 83, due out in May. Because I just got number 82 out the door a couple of weeks ago, I'm shooting for mid-to-late June for 83 and back on schedule for 84 (September).

At the moment 83 is full with regard to poetry but I have room for a couple more illustrations. 84 is about 90% full vis-à-vis writing and I have room for more than a couple illustrations. 85 (January 2010) is wide open.

I have only a few submissions on hand and not responded to at the moment.

I have still been unable to get in touch with Steve Cooper. His car was seen parked outside the place where he works (although he could not be found). So as of about two weeks ago I'm sure he was still alive. Unfortunately, he has a modest amount of artwork that I intended to put in dreams and nightmares. I expect to get it back someday and will publish it after I receive it. I don't think there's anything I can do to speed this up at the moment.

This means I don't have much art backlog and so I'm interested in small filler illustrations with a decidedly science-fiction or fantasy element that I could use decoratively. Ideal is to e-mail them to me as JPEG attachments. I do have a scanner, if you can't e-mail me your pictures. if you don't know what I like, I like both graphic and detailed work (the latter epitomized by Allen K.). I'm afraid I don't have much space for things best described as "cute." horror illustrations are okay, but not if the main point of the drawing is to show blood dripping out of somebody's chest where his or her heart used to be, or the like.

I may have forgotten to mention that I am now paying $10 plus two copies for art, just as for poetry and flash fiction. I pay on acceptance.

I prefer paying by PayPal, but I don't insist on it.
